Decorative Concrete Information – Application Guide
Exposed Aggregates Slabs
An exposed-aggregate surface is obtained by placing concrete and then removing the outer ‘skin’ of cement paste to uncover decorative coarse aggregate (either batched into the concrete mix or seeded onto the surface). Because of its durability and skid resistance, an exposed aggregate finish is ideal for most flatwork.
Exposed aggregate – and possibly coloured – concrete has numerous possible applications:
- In the area of shape and appearance, a great diversity can be achieved: fine or coarse texture, use of rounded gravel or crushed stone. In addition there is a wide range of colours.
- It is perfectly geared to the buildings, old or new, made of natural stone, concrete or brick.
- It is possible to achieve any shape whatsoever. Slabs that will have heavy loads or have an irregular shape, can be fitted with a reinforcement mesh.
- The surface texture and colour can be chosen in function of the readability of the public space, the various purposes and the priority rules. The slightly rougher texture prevents skidding and reduces the noise level.
- The material is suitable for both heavy vehicles and for pedestrians. The structure of the pavement must be designed in function of the traffic expected.
